Here at Nooma we do things differently. Here's what makes our schools fantastic.
Chat
We don't understand why chat isn't part of every learning platform. The comfort of knowing that help is just a chat away is powerful. Studying alone sucks and chat is awesome.
Video
We also don't understand why video chat isn't part of every learning platform. Magic happens when two people meet face to face on the Internet. There are two main use cases for Nooma video chat.
- Study rooms: Sometimes it's so much easier to explain in person or by sharing your screen. Students can create study rooms at any time to have a Skype like experience with another student.
- Networking: Getting the class into groups is always a struggle. With Nooma, you can get your class into groups of 2 or 3 with just a click. If you want everyone to get in new groups you just press shuffle.
Community building tools
Content is not enough. Anyone can get a world class education online, but why don't more people do it? It's hard to learn alone. Only when great content is combined with a vibrant community can lifelong learning happen. Here are some features that we added to foster this environment:
- Leaders: For a community to thrive, the teacher can use a little help from the leaders. Leaders are past students who volunteer to help plan community events in exchange for mentorship from the teacher.
- Culture of giving: Teaching is the best way to learn and when we're learning we can use a little encouragement. When someone touches your soul through their kindness, you can give them a Nooma which is a symbolic token of gratitude that can only be given to one person per day.
- Live events: Live events inject a sense of community that no pre-recorded video can and we believe live events should be a core part of a teacher's community. The teacher can turn Nooma into a live broadcasting platform with a click of a button.
Access controlled content viewer
We don't understand why an online course is limited to just videos or just text. Why not have both? Our students love that they can see the video and the notes in one screen. The video is great when learning something for the first time but text is more useful for a quick refresh. Every page in Nooma has a video screen that can be used to embed videos or anything from the web and a text companion on the side.
Payment System
We think it's a no brainer that the teacher should be able to control the price and be paid immediately when a transaction has been made. Teachers connect their Stripe directly to Nooma to get full transparency into what's going on.
